Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill over at Breaking the Spine which spotlights highly anticipated upcoming releases. This week I am waiting for On The Come Up by Angie Thomas.
Title: On The Come Up
Author: Angie Thomas
Publication Date: June 5, 2018
Publisher: Balzer + Bray
Page count: 320
Genre: Young Adult | Contemporary
Sixteen-year-old Bri wants to be one of the greatest rappers of all time. Or at least get some streams on her mixtape. As the daughter of an underground rap legend who died right before he hit big, Bri’s got massive shoes to fill. But when her mom unexpectedly loses her job, food banks and shut-off notices become as much a part of her life as beats and rhymes. With bills piling up and homelessness staring her family down, Bri no longer just wants to make it—she has to make it.
WHY I’M EXCITED
Angie Thomas’ debut novel, The Hate U Give, was one of my favorite books from last year, so I’m really excited to for her follow up novel. Starr Carter was the first YA character that I deeply resonated with as black girl, so I’m excited and looking forward to more representation for black girls in Thomas’ second novel.
