Hey everyone! With the exception of On the Come Up, the books I’ve read so far in March were kind of boring and mediocre so I had the (not-so) bright idea to do a five star prediction post with hopes that it would get me excited about reading. It turned out to be a little harder than I expected because I’m generally super stingy with my five star ratings (my 5 stars are reserved for books I absolutely love or could see myself re-reading). But I did it. I went through my TBR, sampled a few ebooks, and then picked the ones I wanted to add to this list. Without further ado, these are the books I believe will pry a five star rating from my stingy hands.
Opposite of Always by Jason Reynolds
I saw a few people mention this book before it came out, but I haven’t seen many reviews for it since it’s release. I even checked Goodreads and didn’t see reviews from friends with similar reading tastes so I ended up pulling out my nook and read the 36 page sample. I loved what I read so I decided to buy it because it seemed promising and cute. I actually started this yesterday and I like it so far. The characters seem interesting and the story feels kind of sad and cute at the same time. I don’t like time travel, but I think the characters, the story, and overall personal enjoyment will lead to a 5 star rating.
We Hunt the Flame (Sands of Arawiya #1) by Hafsah Faizal
My lovely friend, Brittany, kindly let me borrow her copy of this book so I read the first chapter while I was waiting to get my eyebrows waxed this weekend. Similar to Opposite of Always, I quickly fell in love with what I read. I love young adult fantasy and if this book is anything like An Ember in the Ashes structurally (writing style, character development, world-building) then I see a five star rating in its future. Plus, Brittany loves this book. I trust her recommendations.
The Dragon Republic (The Poppy War #2) by R.F. Kuang
The Dragon Republic is one of my most anticipated releases of 2019. I’m expecting this to be as addictive and exceptionally written as The Poppy War was and for it to address all the lingering questions I had at the end of TPW. I’m sure Rin is up to no good and Kuang is going to rip out my heart. I’m ready for whatever happens because I have a feeling this is going to exceed my expectations and strut right into the best of 2019.
Daisy Jones & the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid
I like Taylor Jenkins Reid, but I’ve only read two of her books: The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo (absolutely loved) and Maybe in Another Life (absolutely disappointing). Anyways, so many people have been raving about Daisy Jones and since my attempts to avoid overhyped books are futile, I added it to my TBR. The sample was only 22 pages, but I liked what I read. However, I decided that I’ll go the audiobook route because it’s written in interview format. I think the audiobook will have a greater impact on my overall experience and will likely help this book earn that five star rating.
Mistborn: The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson
Everbody and they mama loves Brandon Sanderson (at least it seems that way), but I’ve kind of been terrified to pick up his books for several reasons. Because I’m weak when it comes to hyped books, I added this to my TBR. I read a few pages of The Final Empire to get a feel for his writing style and it wasn’t as dense as I expected it to be. I hope to read this soon. ish. Okay, at least by summer. Fingers crossed. Bottom line, I’ve heard wonderful things about the magic system so I think (more accurately, I hope) that and the characters will result in a five star rating. I hope.
