Top Ten Tuesday: Popular Books I Disliked

Hey everyone! I’m back with another Top Ten Tuesday post.

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. This week’s topic is unpopular bookish opinions. Because I had this tweet go viral last year, I figured I’d sit this one out and just talk about popular backlisted books I disliked.

Please understand that I am not bashing these books at all. If you like them or love them, I’m happy. This is not a reflection of you at all. I’m sure there are some books that I like that you hate.

☕ The Young Elites by Marie Lu – This was one of the books I read early in my Bookstagram “career.” I didn’t enjoy it and gave it away shortly after.

☕ A Court of Thorns and Rose – This is another book I read early in my life as a Bookstagrammer and the first book I “live-tweeted” on my non-bookish Twitter account. I expected the moon and the stars because I couldn’t stop hearing about this book on Bookstagram. Unfortunately, I was so bored.

☕ A Gathering of Shadows by V.E. Schwab – A.K.A. the most disappointing book I read in 2018 (review). I loved A Darker Shade of Magic and then this happened. I’ve come to the conclusion that Schwab writes really good first books, but not great sequels. I gave the rest of the series away and only kept A Darker Shade of Magic on my shelf. 

☕ Caraval by Stephanie Garber – The first book I reviewed on this blog (review). It wasn’t what I expected and by the end, I was exhausted from all the lies.

☕ The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern – The Night Circus is every Booktuber’s favorite book. Lol. I tried the audiobook and the physical book, but I just could not get into the story. Absolutely nothing happens. I DNF’d it at 150 pages and decided this isn’t for me.

☕ The Cruel Prince by Holly Black – I broke a book buying ban last year to purchase this book because there was so much buzz around it. Plus, one of my favorite booktubers loved it and she doesn’t typically read YA fantasy. I wanted to love this so much and sometimes I feel tempted to give it another chance because everyone loves it. Unfortunately, I’ve come to the conclusion that I just don’t like fae/faerie stories. 

☕ Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins – Or as I like to call it: the book of scammers (Etienne) and cheaters (Etienne). This was hilariously bad and I tweeted the whole experience (review)

☕ The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater – I finished this series (on audio) and I (surprisingly) liked the two middle books, but I didn’t like The Raven Boys. Me and Maggie’s writing just don’t go together.
