Two Years of Book Blogging Q&A

Hi friends! During my hiatus I had the (not so) bright idea to do a Q&A and giveaway to celebrate my second blogiversary, which was on August 27th. As I started compiling the questions from Twitter and Instagram, I realized that this post was going to be too damn long so I decided to split up the Q&A and giveaway. Today, I’m bringing you the Q&A portion. The giveaway will go up later this week. Since this post is already long, I’ll save the highlights from my two years of blogging and sappiness for the giveaway post. Without further ado, the questions and answers.

Ignacio – @ignaciorlimon:

1. Where would your ideal reading spot be if you could pick anywhere in the world?
It’s kind of hard to pick just one location, but I think I would like to revisit some of my favorite vacation spots (San Francisco and Chicago) and add a few new places I’ve always wanted to go (Italy and Greece). Also (because I’m a nostalgic bitch), if I had the ability to travel back in time and sit under the mango tree in the backyard of my childhood home, I’d totally love that. I used to spend hours sitting under that tree reading. I don’t think I answered the question, but let’s pretend I did.

2. What favorite snacks/meal/beverages would you take to said destination?

I don’t really snack while reading so I’d say a bottle of water, trail mix and some watermelon. I love those three things.

3. Your house is on fire! You have enough time to grab three books! What are they?

Oh shit. This is a tough question. Umm…let’s see. My Goldsboro edition of The Kingdom of Copper by S.A. Chakraborty. Not only is it my favorite book, but it’s signed and has sprayed edges. Harry Potter illustrated edition (not sure which of the three). Maybe I’ll just throw the entire Harry Potter collection out the window and hope they land okay. Haha. Lastly, A Reaper at the Gates by Sabaa Tahir Goldsboro edition. It’s also signed with sprayed edges. Goldsboro is expensive, but their special editions are the bomb.com.

Isamar – @bibisamar:

1. If you could only pick one book to take on a trip which would it be?

Another tough question. I like to read light fluffy books on trips so I’d probably say a contemporary romance. Not a specific book, but something from that genre.

2. Has anyone ever made fun of you for you love of reading?

I don’t think anyone’s ever made fun of me, but people are always slightly taken aback by how much I read.

3. Do you prefer a physical book, ebook or audio book and why?

If you asked me this a year ago, I would’ve said physical books hands down, but right now i’m leaning towards audiobooks. It’s more convenient for me because of my schedule. I can listen to an audiobook when I’m doing mindless activities at work, but I can’t just sit at my desk with a physical book.

4. Did you end up buying the Jackie Aina palette?

Sadly, I didn’t. I couldn’t justify the purchase because your girl is on a budget 😦 I hope they release a special holiday edition or something so I can convince someone to buy it for me.

5. Did you always love to read? Even as a little kid?

Yup. I’ve been this nerdy bookworm my whole life. I honestly can’t think of a moment in my life when I wasn’t reading. Growing up, I would sit in the kitchen after bedtime and read just using the overhead stove light. See, nerdy my whole life.

Abigail – @abbajane:

Do you have a book related job? If not, how do you stay encouraged to read outside?

I wish I had a book-related job! I get most of reading done on my lunch break, when I get home from work, or on the weekends. Reading has always been my escape from the world so luckily, I don’t need a lot of motivation. On days when I’m too exhausted to read, I just relax and find another mindless activity like watching Netflix or Booktube videos. God, I hope this answered your question.

Destiny – @myhoneyreads on IG and @myhoneytweets on Twitter:

1. Your blog is aesthetically pleasing! Just tell me all your secrets.

OMG! This means so much to me! I honestly don’t do much and I think there are blogs out there that look 10x better than mine. My biggest secret is that I use Canva for EVERYTHING. All my graphics are made in Canva. I use Pexels or Canva for images, I download free fonts from dafont.com, and have recently started using free book cover mockup sites for review images. I think that’s basically it. DM me if you have specific questions.

15. Do you blog in small batches or just write a post as you get the time?

I typically write my posts as they come up, but I’m trying to be better about that this fall. Because I work at a university, fall is super busy so I have to get better at planning. I made a spreadsheet a few days ago to help me be productive and stay on top of my blog posts so hopefully that helps. My fingers are crossed.

16. Favorite (if any) weekly meme to participate in?

Top Ten Tuesday is my favorite. I also love Top 5 Tuesday even though I don’t participate in that. I used to love Waiting on Wednesday, which I think is called Can’t Wait Wednesday now. I don’t do that meme anymore because I kind of ran out of books to talk about. Hahaha.

Elisabet – @life_of_lizz:

11. Is there any song that immediately makes you think of a book/series –

War of Hearts by Ruelle makes me think of The Dark Artifices by Cassandra Clare.

Run This Town by Jay-Z and Rihanna makes me think of Six of Crows.

Stephanie – @BooksintheSkye:

How do you get through your slumps?

Before this year, I’d normally read a favorite, but now I lean into the slump and don’t force myself to read. Burnout is real so I’ll do other things like watch tv or just rest to avoid it.

Vanshika – @VanshikaPrusty:

What’s your favourite dinosaur?

Is the saber-toothed tiger a dinosaur? If it is, then that’s my favorite. And that’s only because I loved Aisha Campbell from The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers growing up. Her coin was a saber-toothed tiger.

Kelly – @kelly_reads:

What’s a memorable blogging experience you had?

Surpassing 500 followers was very memorable. I never thought my blog would grow the way it has or that I’d befriend so many wonderful people all because of this little blog.

Ellyn – @allonsythornrax:

1. What time of day do you get the most blogging done?

I’m a night owl so I don’t start on most things until about 9pm. Lol. I can’t seem to get much done during the day.

2. Best/Worst blogging experience so far?

Best – meeting up with a few of my blogger friends in real life and getting an advanced copy of The Kingdom of Copper by S.A. Chakraborty.

Worst – I haven’t had a bad experience so far. Blogging is a hobby so I don’t let things affect me much. Also, I’ve curated a space online that allows me to do what I want and interact with people I want to interact with.

3. Do you like seeing gifs/images in reviews?

I love gifs and memes in reviews!

4. Do you have a favourite Pokémon?

Unfortunately, I don’t. I used to watch Pokémon growing up and I always wanted to collect Pokémon cards, but it’s not something I got that deep into.

Colleen – @colleenisbooked:

1. When/why did you decide to start a blog?

I started book blogging two years ago while I was in grad school. I wanted to branch out from bookstagram because I had a lot more to say about the books in my photos. I love bookstagram, but it’s not the best space to have an in-depth conversation about books.

2. What are your favorite blog posts to write? – @colleenisbooked

I love writing reviews even though they don’t get as much traffic. They’re challenging to write, but they really boost my confidence as a book blogger. I also love weekly memes.

Kayla – @book_beaut:

1. What are your favourite book series?

Harry Potter, The Hunger Games, The City of Brass, Six of Crows, The Dark Artifices, The Chronicles of Narnia, An Ember in the Ashes.

2. Where do you go to read?

I read at home either in bed or on my couch. I don’t seem to get a lot of reading down in public settings.

3. Who is your favourite character?

Inej Ghafa. Bad bitch extraordinaire.

Phew. That was a lot. Shout out to everyone who submitted questions. I’m sorry If I missed your question. Let me know and I’ll be happy to answer it on Twitter or Instagram. Thanks so much for reading! Stay tuned for the giveaway.

  1. Congratulations on your blogiversary, Merline! It’s funny how our reading preferences change. I was a physical book advocate through and through, until recently when I started reading e-books through the Libby app. I love it! Also, your blog is absolutely gorgeous! Thank you for sharing your tips 🌟
