Favorite Non-Bookish Things of 2019

Hey everyone! Today I’m here to share the first post in my end of year series: favorite non-bookish things of 2019. This list is kind of lengthy so I’m going to jump right into the things I couldn’t get enough of this year.

1. Aldi

I discovered Aldi over the summer thanks to my bookish friend, Cody (@my_bibliophilic_life). I started budgeting this year, but I just couldn’t figure out how to save money on groceries until she talked about Aldi in her Instagram story. I’m forever thankful she shared that gem. I don’t have the patience for couponing so Aldi’s prices are EXACTLY what I needed. $60 for two weeks of groceries is truly a blessing.

2. Beats Wireless Headphones

My best friend gifted these to me for my birthday last year. Since my birthday is on December 31st it feels like I was gifted them in 2019. I use them ALL THE TIME (work, gym, grocery store, home, etc.). Wireless is so convenient and they’ve helped me focus more with audiobooks.

3. Benefit, Precisely My Brow Pencil

This brow pencil always gets me right. I can’t remember what I used to shape my brows before this.

4. Aluminum Water Bottles

I prefer glass bottles, but one day I grabbed an aluminum one I got from a work event because I was rushing. Life changing. I couldn’t believe the water remained cool and crisp after 5 hours. I was so shooked. I haven’t gone back to my regular glass bottle since that February day.

5. House Plants

I bought two house plants this year, Fran (named after Fran Fine from The Nanny. I love that show.) and Diana (name after Diana Ross). Fran is a pothos (devil’s ivy) and Diana is a peace lily. I love them. A lot. When the peace lily bloomed 4 flowers this spring, it felt like the proudest moment of my life.

6. Haagan-Dazs Spirits Rum Tres Leches

I’m not an ice cream person, but I became an ice cream person this year all because of this. It’s a little pricey, but oh so delicious. I mostly buy it when there’s a BOGO sale at my local grocery store.

1. Nao

I discovered Nao earlier this year and I LOVE HER. Her voice is freaking amazing. Her song, Another Lifetime, is one of my all time favorites.

2. Jonas Brothers

I didn’t realize how much I listened to the Jonas Brothers until Spotify called me out (Spotify has an end of year feature). The JoBros were my top artist. I’m so happy they’re back and thriving. I saw them in concert in August and it was an incredible experience.

3. Game of Thrones Season 8 Score

Game of Thrones season 8 was so fucking disappointing, but Ramin Djawadi’s score SLAPPED. And according to Spotify, The Last of the Starks was my top song of 2019. I’m not embarrassed to say I listened to it almost daily after the season ended. I hope Ramin Djawadi gets ALL THE THINGS BECAUSE HE DESERVES.

I made a short playlist so check it out!

1. One Day At A Time Season 3

I can’t recommend this show enough. It follows a multi-generational Cuban family and tackles important topics like immigration, race, mental health, homophobia, gender identity, PTSD, sexism, alcoholism, and more. It’s funny and poignant. I was furious when Netflix cancelled it, but happy that it’s been picked up for a 4th season because we deserve to more Rita Moreno on our TV screens.

2. On My Block Season 2

I’ve recommended this show to everyone because I LOVE IT SO MUCH. Season 2 was even better than the first and I’m so elated Netflix renewed it for a third season. Netflix has a tendency to cancel POC shows after a few seasons so I was really nervous. I hope more people watch it.

3. Peaky Blinders

I randomly started watching Peaky Blinders in August and made it through the 4 seasons that were available on Netflix US by the end of the weekend. I was so in love with this show that I ended up figuring out how to stream the new season while it was still airing in the UK because I couldn’t wait for it air in the U.S. Would recommend if you love Six of Crows. Thomas Shelby is literally the adult Kaz Brekker.

4. Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj

I’ve learned so much from this show. It’s informative, funny, and Hasan Minhaj is officially my boo.

1. Zendaya

Obviously, Zendaya is not a thing, but I didn’t know where else to talk about her. She’s my favorite celebrity of 2019. I’ve made her the exception to my “I don’t stan celebrities” rule.

2. Trello

I discovered this nifty app in September and I’m over here like, “Omg! Where have you been all my life?” I love this app. I use it at work and home. I even introduced it to my colleagues because I think it’s amazing.

3. Hootsuite

Secret time: I schedule my tweets. Not all the time, but most of the ones that promote my blog content are scheduled. Get yourself Hootsuite or Tweetdeck (if you only use Twitter). It helps.

So there you have it friends. A few of my favorite non-bookish things that I loved this year. What are yours? Let me know in the comments! Thanks so much for reading!

  1. I may need to try Benfit’s brow pencil. I picked up Fenty Beauty’s brow pencil and I love it. I didn’t care about my brows until I joined the book community, lol.

  2. I discovered Peaky Blinders this year too and I binged the hell out of it lol. And I totally agree with the ‘Tommy Shelby being adult Kaz Brekker’ thing – that’s actually how I found out about the show. Someone on Twitter said exactly that and included a scene of Tommy being Savage™ and the rest is history.

  3. What a wonderful list, Merline! ❤ I adore Trello so much – it has made my blogging life so much easier to keep track of! I've been trying to budget my grocery shopping as well, and have been considering going to Aldi! One recently opened up near my house, so I'll have to convince my mother to shop with me there. Haha! Even though I haven't watched the GoT series, I adore the score so much! I've been listening to the score from season 8 so much in the past few months!

    1. KELLY!!! I’ve missed you so much on here. I hope things are going well and you had a wonderful holiday.

I hope you made/make a trip to Aldi. Their prices are the most budget friendly of any grocery store I’ve found.
